Sessions I want to see at MySQL conference 2012

Апрель 9th, 2012

In case you live under a rock, the MySQL conference starts on Tuesday. There are 8 concurrent tracks of content. Aside from my own talks, here are the sessions I would most like to see.

On Tuesday:

  • Tutorial: Innodb and XtraDB Architecture and Performance Optimization. Peter’s talks are always great, and this is a perennial favorite. If you have never been, you should go to this one. You will realize how little you really know about InnoDB/XtraDB, and how much it matters.
  • Tutorial: Linux and H/W optimizations for MySQL. Last year I tweeted that Yoshinori’s tutorial was the 3rd edition of High Performance MySQL, and I really wasn’t exaggerating that much.
  • BoF session: Percona XtraDB Cluster. I believe that this is one of the few truly groundbreaking changes to MySQL — right up there with “MySQL has transactions now” and “MySQL adds replication.”

OurSQL Episode 84: Going to the Big Show

Март 23rd, 2012

This week we give an overview of Percona Live and what we think are the highlights, including which sessions we recommend for beginners and which we cannot wait to see for ourselves.

On Tuesday June 5th, 2012, a MySQL Innovation Day is being hosted at Oracle’s Conference Center in Redwood Shores, California. The MySQL Innovation day will feature multiple “lightning” talks by Oracle’s MySQL Engineers, If you cannot make it out to California, the lightning talks will be available via a live webcast, too - so either way, save the date! Unfortunately there's no link yet.

BoFs and lightning talks at the MySQL conference

Март 9th, 2012

We’re running Birds of a Feather (BoF) sessions and lightning talks this year at the MySQL conference, similarly to previous years. You can help by submitting proposals ASAP. The deadline is Monday, and it is a hard deadline.

Submit a BoF SessionSubmit a Lightning Talk

Why is this a big deal? Why the hard deadline? It turns out that this is one of the things I always underestimated. Planning for these is actually quite difficult and they are very expensive. That’s because we have to ensure that there is room for them to take place, doors are unlocked, and the lights are turned on. This really surprised me — I always thought it was simple to let people gather together in the evening. Well, nothing is simple at a big conference venue. If you want to have a BoF session at a bar, that’s simple, but that’s not what this conference has typically done, and we are trying to continue the conference as it’s always been.

Speaking at the 2012 Percona Live MySQL Conference

Февраль 27th, 2012

This year, I have the pleasure of returning to the MySQL Conference & Expo as a speaker. Percona have picked up the torch that O’Reilly had held as the conference organizers, and they’re putting together a 3-day conference this year. I am co-presenting a tutorial with Yves Trudeau from Percona.

Get a free copy of High Performance MySQL 3rd Edition!

Февраль 15th, 2012

Want a free copy of High Performance MySQL, Third Edition? If you register before the early-bird pricing expires for the MySQL Conference in April, and use the discount code PL-Book, you’ll get to take a free copy home from the conference!

And now, a status update: I’m currently proofing the QC2 (quality control #2) revision of the book; after this, the book goes to manufacturing. The PDF is now 820 pages, which is a lot of work to proofread. You can imagine how much more in-depth we’ve been able to go with so many more pages.

The free sample online is Chapter 8, on optimizing MySQL configuration. Liz van Dijk just tweeted this about it:

The sample chapter of High Perf MySQL 3rd Ed is both amazingly to the point and hilarious at times. Instant buy for me.

If you haven’t yet, I encourage you to take a look at the sample. Then go register for the conference to get your free copy, and I’ll see you in Santa Clara! We’re also arranging a book-signing at the conference, so you can get some scribbles on your copy if you want!
