I  gave a lightning talk on MySQL Innodb and how realestate.com.au configures their databases to the DevOPS Melbourne meetup last night.

My slides can be found here.

Simply some take aways are

• Use Innodb for everything (unless another engine is appropriate)
• Having the working set in bufferpool makes MySQL Innodb fast by eliminating those foreground randrom reads of tablespace
• Use a RAID controller with BBU and write back cache for transactional log performance

I (Andrew Hutchings) will be giving a talk on Drizzle (a database server that originated as a fork of MySQL) and mydumper (a multi-threaded, high-performance dump/restore toolset for MySQL).

We also have Mark Riddoch coming along to talk about the work on our Reference Architecture toolset.

There will also be other representatives of SkySQL there and we will be hanging around in the pub afterwards to talk about anything in the MySQL ecosystem.

Real-Life Use Cases From Data Administration Hell

Data is the most valuable asset of an organization because it's irreplaceable.

Yet, we hear about f**k ups related to data administration every day by startups and organizations of all sizes. Sometimes it's no one's fault. Sometimes it's the fault of a drunk friend who shouldn't have been [wherever he was] at the first place.

Yet, at other times, the disaster could have been prevented. Sometimes, these f**k ups are caused by bad design. Sometimes, it's a bad query that made it into the production branch. Sometimes, it's a human error that ruins the day.

Ever had a bad query slip through QA? Or a configuration option that you thought would help the situation? Sometimes, the resulting disaster could have been prevented if those operating had simply followed the rules. Sometimes it's the lack of presence of rules that leads to a disaster. Sometimes, the "acts of prevention" worsen the impact of the disaster. Sometimes it's over confidence of those administering data.

Imagine deletion of a wrong record or from a wrong server. Or not treating the only SAN as a SPOF. Sometimes, the f**k up has been happening for years, yet no one realized or fixed it.

Sometimes, the f**k up is created intentionally. By focusing on things other than operational and capacity requirements. Sometimes, a small error threatens the very existence of a company.

At least once of a $100M company.

These f**k ups happen everywhere. At organizations of all sizes.

In this talk, Frank Mashraqi will explore real-life inspired, breath-taking (anonymized) use cases that created data administration hell for an organization. He will also explore how, if at all, these f**k ups could have been avoided.

This session presents an opportunity to learn from the real-life costly data administration mistakes of others and what strategies can help you with not getting caught off guard.

Bio

With more than a decade of scalability, disaster recovery and engineering management experience under his belt, Frank specializes in building and scaling NoSQL and SQL based platforms for graph processing and big data deployments using low concurrencies.

He is an expert in audience acquisition through organic search engine optimization and audience monetization through cutting edge technologies as re-targeting, social targeting and influencer targeting.

His past experience includes co-founding a graph processing company that applies advanced sociological theories to online advertising, scaling Fotolog to help it become the 13th most visited site on the Internet, and advising companies like Betaworks, Bitly, TwitterFeed, Chartbeat and ShermansTravel.

He holds a BBA in Accounting and a BS in Computer Information Systems.

The plan is to gather at 5:30pm on Wednesday after three (or for for those of us starting on Sunday) days of intense learning. This year, you won’t need to find where to kill few hours in between of the OOW sessions and customer appreciation event at the Treasure Island — the best place to be this year is our bloggers meetup — the place where all the “cool kids” are.

As usual, thanks to Oracle Technology Network and Pythian for sponsoring the venue and drinks. HP is planning to establish a prize again this year for something fun… yes, we will again do something fun.

For those of you who don’t know the history… The Bloggers Meetups during the Oracle Open World were started by Mark Rittman and continued by Eddie Awad and then I picked up the flag. They have been great success so let’s keep them this way! The closest thing I know of to a “Northern Virginia MySQL Meetup” is the Sterling Database Data Solutions Group. I got in touch with the organizer and we scheduled a meeting next Wednesday July 28th. I’ll be presenting, and so will someone from Fusion-IO, a solid-state storage vendor. This is on short notice, so tell your friends about it! It would be great to grow a strong monthly meetup presence in this area.

Here’s the abstract I sent: “This talk covers best practices to help you get the most out of MySQL performance. It assumes you know a database well, though it need not be MySQL. We’ll cover several angles of the topic. Configuration is usually the first thing people ask about. Although it’s possible to misconfigure MySQL and get bad performance, the configuration options you need for good performance are few and rather simple. We’ll see how to inspect MySQL’s performance and status, also a fairly simple subject. Next is query tuning. There are a few surprises in MySQL due to its simpler query execution engine than Oracle or SQL Server. We’ll see how to avoid those surprises and work with the query optimizer. Finally, we’ll focus on what you should know if you are considering migrating part or all of your application from Oracle. There will be plenty of time for questions, so bring yours!”

I wanted to provide an update on two things:

• Firstly, we have opened registration for InnoDB/XtraDB training in Los Angeles (Nov 18th).
• The second is that while I am in New York City for training (Oct 29th), I’ll be giving a (free) talk at the MySQL Meetup group there (Oct 28th).

We love to speak at Meetup groups.  If you are an organizer feel free to let us know you are interested.  There’s no guarantee that we can get schedules to align – but there are a number of Percona consultants that travel regularly.
