What’s coming up?

Сентябрь 2nd, 2011

In my last post, I provided a short review of what I have been working on in the past few months since I joined the Oracle Linux team. Now it's time for a summary of upcoming events! Looking forward, I already have a few more things lined up:

I'll attend and speak at the Oracle OpenWorld 2011 conference in San Francisco in October. I have a joint session with Chris Mason titled Overview: New Features in Oracle Linux 6 where we'll cover the latest developments. I have another joint presentation with my colleague Rob Young from the MySQL product management team titled Using MySQL with Other Oracle Products - this one will give an overview how MySQL has been integrated with the other products in the Oracle portfolio.

At OpenWorld, I'll also do some booth duty (find me at the Oracle Linux demo pods) and I'll also give a number of hands-on lab sessions:

For these labs, I created an Oracle Linux 6.1 VirtualBox appliance and wrote a 70+ page lab manual. I'll be around, aiding the attendees through these exercises.

By the way, a sneak preview of these hands-on labs will be available prior to OpenWorld as well: they are part of an upcoming series of the OTN sysadmin days, free one-day events that will provide practical workshops on both Oracle Solaris and Oracle Linux. We have three days scheduled so far - the first one of these will come up faily soon:

On November 15-17, I'll be at the DOAG 2011 Konferenz + Ausstellung in Nuremberg, Germany. I'll give two presentations (in German):

I'll also hold an "Unconference" (or BOF) about Oracle Linux and the UEK together with Manuel Hossfeld, one of our Linux/OVM consultants.

And finally, I'll be giving a talk about "Oracle Linux and the Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel: Status Update and Overview" at the UK Oracle User Group Conference 2011 in Birmingham (UK) on December 6.

If you happen to be at any of these events, please let me know if you'd like to meet!

Java One 2010 Brazil Day 2 Trip Report — Pics & Slides

Декабрь 9th, 2010
JavaOne Latin America 2010 (Day 1 and 0) started in an exciting way where I found a nice multi-instance cluster installation of GlassFish. More on that later but enjoyed meeting colleagues from different groups within Oracle.

I gave a presentation on "Whats New in Enterprise Java Beans 3.1" and the slides are available:

The attendees seem to like simplified packaging (EJB-in-a-WAR and deployment descriptor-free), no-interface bean, cron-like syntax, and other features were well appreciated by the users. All other sessions were going pretty packed as well to the extent that some of the sessions are having a re-run today and some of today's sessions have moved to a much bigger hall. Make sure to note the changes.

After that, Alexandra and I presented at a MySQL Community Event on how Java EE 6, GlassFish, NetBeans, and MySQL present an ideal open-source stack for building Web applications very easily, the slides are available:

Vinicius Senger from GlobalCode arranged an impromptu discussion on Java-based Web Frameworks at end of the day. There were representations from Java EE 6, Wicket, GWT, VRaptor,  Spring MVC, ADF, and Demoiselles. It was a lively discussion where each framework was talking about the pros/cons of different frameworks and the community was asking questions. CDI got good appreciation from different folks and it indeed is one of the most powerful technologies introduced in the Java EE 6 platform.

Matt Raibles "Comparing JVM Web Frameworks" presentation was discussed as well. The consensus was that the chosen frameworks are not an apple-to-apple comparison. For example, while Rails and Grails are complete stack, JSF2, Wicket, and Vaadin are presentation layers only. I gave the same feedback to him at Rich Web Experience as well so hopefully the matrix will be updated appropriately.

Also found some great deployments of GlassFish in this part of the world. We are looking for partners (System Integrators, Independent Software Vendors/Developers, Consultants, Training Partners) who can help us spread the message of GlassFish in South America. Drop a comment on this blog if you are interested.

For tomorrow, there are couple of changes to the list of Java EE 6 & GlassFish sessions ...
  • "S320003 - Servlet 3.0 Extensible, Asynchronous and Easy to Use" moved from its original slot of (4:15 - 5pm) to (4pm - 4:45pm) and the location changes from Auditorio 1 to the Keynote Hall (on the ground floor).
  • "S313189 - Complete Tools Coverage for the Java EE 6 Platform" moved from Auditorio 1 to Keynote Hall (on the ground floor).
Rest of the schedule stays as is.
And now day 2 pictures from Oracle Open World and JavaOne 2010 in Brazil ...

And finally the evolving photo album so far:

On a personal front, somebody mentioned the landscape from Chili, food from Peru, and girls from Argentina (or Brazil depending upon who you ask) is the most fascinating threesome ;-) I've never been to Chili, Peru, and Argentina so will have to figure out how to experience that :-) Any Java conferences there ?

Also, its weird to experience Christmas in the hot weather of Sao Paulo. I wonder the white christmas here refers to white sand on the beach.  The malls certainly have huge christmas trees and even there is a Santa station but feels awkard without the cold weather. Tomorrow is the last day of JavaOne and I'm soooo looking forward to head back home and can only think of the following song ...

Oracle Open World / Java One 2010 Brazil Day 1 Trip Report

Декабрь 8th, 2010
Oracle Open World 2010 Latin America was kick started this morning by Oracle's President Mark Hurd. Later Adam Messinger's (Vice President in Fusion Middleware group at Oracle) keynote started JavaOne Brazil and gave a status update on the Java platform. In his talk, Staffan showed a demo of JRockit Mission Control. TIM (a local Brazilian telecom company) showed how they are using Java to serve multi-million users in Brazil. Java FX super fast rendering capabilities were shown in a video. I showed how a multi-instance GlassFish 3.1 cluster can be easily created using web-based administration console. The steps to reproduce the demo are explained in the video below:

I accidentally left my tweetdeck open before the demo machines were locked and so tweets were popping all through out the demo. The attendees seem to had a good laugh at that :-)

The three Technical General Sessions by Danny Coward, Jerome Dochez, and Greg Bollela dig deeper into Java SE, Java EE, and Mobile/Embedded platforms. Jerome's talk showed a typical 3-tier application that allows the user to monitor twitter trends for pre-defined hashtags. More details about the application and downloadable code are available here.

And now day 1 pictures from Oracle Open World, Oracle Develop, and JavaOne 2010 in Brazil ...

Come by and meet us at the Java EE 6 booth in the JavaOne exhibitor floor. I reached little bit late to the OTN party but the place was totally rocking with the community.

This is Brazil so here is a sample of "booth models" at the exhibitor floor ...

This is not meant to offend anybody but just to show culutral shift obvious due to the geography. And yes, I took permissions from each of the models before taking their picture :-)

Here is another fun activity performed on the exhibitor floor:

Looking forward to Java EE & GlassFish sessions tomorrow and day after. And don't forget to attend the FREE MySQL Community Event tomorrow!

I enjoyed meeting Vinicius Senger, Yara Senger, Daniel deOliveira, Sven Reimers, Eduardo Lima, and several other Java community members.

And finally the evolving photo album so far:

Log Buffer #203, A Carnival of the Vanities for DBAs

Октябрь 2nd, 2010

Welcome to Log Buffer. The weekly roundup of posts, and news of what’s happening in the database world.

At Pythian, we’re pretty much recovered from a hectic Oracle OpenWorld 2010, and I’m no longer an OOW virgin. What an experience! I had the pleasure of meeting many of you Log Buffer readers and contributors at the Annual Blogger’s Meetup at Jillian’s. Great to put faces to names. And I now officially feel like “Vanessa from Log Buffer”, as many of your t-shirts will show.

Many thanks to Marc Fielding for providing the hot items for this week’s post, in Log Buffer #203. Enjoy.

The hubdub from OOW10 continues:

Opinions on the newly announced Exalogic are starting to form. Alex Williams on Read Write Cloud points out why Exalogic is not an elastic cloud. David Dorf provides his perspective for Exalogic’s application to the retail industry as a means to simplifying infrastructure, in conjunction with Exadata. Lorraine Lawson tries to clear up the confusion around “what exactly is Exalogic”.

Floyd Teter, on ORCLville provides his thoughts on the show, and Ray Wang provides good final wrapup notes, OOW from an insider’s perspective.

Congratulations to Asif Momen of The Momen Blog, who won the t-shirt signature contest. The Apple TV meetup contest winners will be announced on Monday, and listed in next Friday’s Log Buffer.

A litigous Oracle is very different from the old Sun. Aside from the well-publicized Google Android lawsuits this week Oracle is suing Micron, Samsung and other-chip makers for pricing fixing.

Katherine Noyes reports on the ‘Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel’.

Greg Rhan, from Structured Data gives a good overview of the newly released Oracle Exadata Database Machine X2-2 & X2-8 for those who missed it. Referenced is Alex Gorbachev’s tidy table of hardware components, comparing Exadata V2, X2-2 & X2-8.

Moving away from Oracle, in the MySQL world:

Jayant Kumar experiments with MySQL/Postgres speed tests in a part 1 and part 2 post series.

MySQL cluster benchmarks appear on Johan Andersson’s Cluster and HA blog.

Andrew Hutchings, LinuxJedi, writes a drizzle migration article on his new blog, since joining Rackspace as a Drizzle developer.

Guiseppe Maxia, the Data Charmer, highlights a funny recipe to convert an IP address into an integer in order to use it as a server-ID, and then offers a better solution.

In SQL Server news, SP2 is out, promising tighter integration with Sharepoint.

Pinal Dave tells how to get query running session on SQLauthority.com.

Microsoft MVP Sean McCowan shows DBAs how to use PowerShell to Administer SQL Server 2008, a good thing to know, in his, and the “Scripting Guy’s” opinion. Vijay Patel talks about partitioning.

Robert Catteral focuses on catalogue statistics as a way to improve query performance in a DB2 for z/OS environment.

Now that I know many of you, I’ll be chasing you down personally to host an edition of Log Buffer. Seriously, to keep the tradition alive, we need more than the voice of “Vanessa Log Buffer”. Please connect to the Log Buffer coordinator (me), if you’re interested.

Have a great weekend.

Bloggers Meetup @ Oracle OpenWorld 2010

Август 28th, 2010

Oracle OpenWorld Bloggers Meetup It’s that time of the year again — Oracle OpenWorld time — and it’s my pleasure to announce our regular Oracle bloggers meetup again this year. We all know that Oracle community has grown this year so we expect to see folks from all the different technologies including MySQL, Java, Sun hardware folks in addition to the core Oracle database and apps crowd.

So… all of you Oracle bloggers attending Oracle Open World 2010
… you are invited to attend this Oracle Bloggers Meetup during OOW 2009 — a chance to meet your online buddies face-to-face in relaxed and informal atmosphere.

When: Wed, 22-Sep-2010, 5:30pm

Where: Lower Dining Room, Jillian’s Billiards @ Metreon, 101 Fourth Street, San Francisco, CA 94103.

See the “Lower Dining Room” on the floor plan below and ask where is the “Bloggers Meetup” booked under my name — Alex Gorbachev. These are the keywords to find us easily.

Jilllian's Billiards floor plan

The plan is to gather at 5:30pm on Wednesday after three (or for for those of us starting on Sunday) days of intense learning. This year, you won’t need to find where to kill few hours in between of the OOW sessions and customer appreciation event at the Treasure Island — the best place to be this year is our bloggers meetup — the place where all the “cool kids” are.

As usual, thanks to Oracle Technology Network and Pythian for sponsoring the venue and drinks. HP is planning to establish a prize again this year for something fun… yes, we will again do something fun.

Last year, we were collecting signatures on our Bloggers Meetup T-Shirts so feel free to wear them this year to show your seniority at the event. ;-) This year’s activity is a surprise but if you have something cool in mind — let me know privately {last_name} at pythian.com.

For those of you who don’t know the history… The Bloggers Meetups during the Oracle Open World were started by Mark Rittman and continued by Eddie Awad and then I picked up the flag. They have been great success so let’s keep them this way! To give you an idea, here are the photos from the OOW08 Bloggers Meetup (courtesy of Eddie Awad) and last year’s meetup blog post update from myself.

If you are planning to attend, please comment here with the phrase “COUNT ME IN”. This will help us make sure we have the attendance numbers right. I will maintain the list here. Make sure you provide your blog URL with your comment — it’s a Bloggers Meetup in the end! Make sure you comment here if you are attending so that we have enough room, food and (most important) drinks.

Of course, do not under any circumstances forget about to blog and tweet about this year’s bloggers meetup.

Looking forward to seeing all of you again this year!
