Июль 27th, 2011

If you’re on openSUSE, you definitely want to upgrade to the latest MariaDB release made on 19/07/2011. Previous security fix disabled XtraDB! This is MariaDB 5.1.55.

If you’re using Gentoo, please test MariaDB 5.2 ebuilds in the MySQL overlay. Its current with MariaDB 5.2.7 as well as MariaDB 5.1.55.

Recently in MariaDB #2

Ноябрь 22nd, 2010

There has been a lot happening in the MariaDB community recently, and there has been growth. Here are some of the highlights. Thank you to all our current contributors, and to others that want to contribute, shoot community[at]askmonty[dot]org an e-mail.

MariaDB 5.2.3 binaries for Solaris and Debian Sparc

Our Sparc community contributor, Mark, has continued to make popular binaries for Solaris 10 and Debian Sparc. He’s kept up to speed with MariaDB 5.2.3, so please visit him and download the binaries.

MariaDB 5.2.3 on the openSUSE Build Service

Community contributor Michal Hrušecký has packaged MariaDB for openSUSE and its available via the openSUSE build service. It is ready up to version 5.2.3, and is still in the unstable repository (it will progress further based on more testing). A benefit of the openSUSE build service is that it also churns out RPMs for CentOS, Fedora, Mandriva, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, openSUSE and SUSE Linux Enterprise.

MariaDB Virtual Machines

Again from Mark, he’s been working on creating virtual machines for people to test MariaDB with. He’s looking for feedback on which virtualization platform people are looking for VMs for. Currently there is a VM for CentOS 5.5 and Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. These are all 64-bit virtual machines. You can make use of them using VirtualBox.

Mirrors

Looking back at the releases page, we have made eleven 5.1 releases and four 5.2 releases. When we made our first 5.1 release we had one mirror (this was in April 2009). When we made our first 5.2 release, we had four mirrors (this was in April 2010). Today we are up to seven mirrors, and from recent requests I expect this to grow. If you want to mirror MariaDB, check out the Mirroring MariaDB guide on the AskMonty Knowledgebase.

yum install mariadb

Июль 19th, 2010

I`m not the biggest fan of openSUSE but this weeks post by Colin Charles makes me happy ..

openSUSE users can now do a mariadb install from their default repositories.

With all the fuzz about Snoracle and MySQL's future last year to me it became clear that we would end up having different MySQL based distributions, probably with different names, and that it would be up to the Linux distributions to provide the users with what they preferred, working with those Linux distributions
therefore would be very important for the MySQL distributions.

Sadly my Fedora box doesn't allow me to do a yum install mariadb yet ... but I`m sure that's only a matter of time ..

OpenSUSE users have a choice of database now!

Июль 18th, 2010

A big shoutout to the openSUSE team: openSUSE 11.3 has been released! And with it comes a choice for the database users out there – you can now choose between MySQL or MariaDB.

I wrote in February 2010 that MariaDB was in the unstable repository for openSUSE, and was informed by Michal that it would be included a little while ago. The version that is shipping is MariaDB 5.1.44, and why not give it a download?

So try it. Install via zypper in mariadb.

Recently in MariaDB #1

Февраль 23rd, 2010

MariaDB Seal The aims of this kind of blog post is simple – I want to help keep the masses informed as to what’s happening with MariaDB, as a whole. There is a community growing, and MariaDB is a community project, not necessarily a Monty Program Ab baby (and we’re clear on this distinction: think of it like Canonical/Ubuntu). So, think of it as such that I’m sharing the good news, and summarising what’s been happening, to save you time.

MariaDB added to the Debian/Ubuntu wishlists
One of MariaDB’s goals is that it should be easily available for download. While we provide binaries and source at the MariaDB download page, we would love to see the binaries sitting in Linux distributions. So it is definitely good to see that it is on the Debian wishlist. It is also worth noting that Ubuntu has got it as a wishlist item as well.

MariaDB via the OpenSUSE build service
A community member, Michal Hrušecký, has decided that there will be tracking of MariaDB, and since it comes out of the OpenSUSE build service, you can find them in the unstable repository, for CentOS/RHEL 5, Fedora 11 and 12, Mandriva 2010, and OpenSUSE 11.1, 11.2, and the factory builds. All these are of course of the latest release available, which is MariaDB 5.1.42.

MariaDB for Solaris 10 and Debian on SPARC
Mark has very kindly decided to build binaries for Solaris 10 on Sparc as well as Debian GNU/Linux on Sparc. He even managed to write up a quick & dirty install guide, which should suffice for all intents and purposes. Note that these are still 5.1.41-RC releases, and you can expect to get updates soon for the released 5.1.42.

Using MariaDB with the MySQL Sandbox
The MySQL Sandbox is a great way to play with new releases of MySQL or MariaDB. Gerry Narvaja has got some tricks up his sleeve, to allow you to get going using MariaDB with the MySQL Sandbox.

MariaDB resources
A few resources if you’re new to the community:

Hope you’ve found this useful, and the aim is to have this bi-monthly, more frequent if there is a need for it. I might even record it as a short podcast, so you can take it on the go. If you have thoughts on this, don’t hesitate to contact me, or drop me an email at colin[AT]askmonty.org.
